VPLS vs H-VPLS

VPLS stands for Virtual Private LAN Services. H-VPLS stands for hierarchical Virtual Private LAN Services
Essentially VPLS and H-VPLS are same since the core configurations which are VFI and xconnect for VPLS and H-VPLS are same.

The difference between them is H-VPLS adds a switch which usually called User facing PE (u-PE) between network PE (n-PE) and customer edge (CE).  The connection between this u-PE (User facing PE)  to n-PE (network facing PE) is Q-in-Q.   For the VPLS, the CE (customer edge device) directly connect to network PE (n-PE).

Since H-VPLS add a Q-in-Q function between network PE (provide edge device) and CE (customer edge device), So the end result is H-VPLS is much flexible and Scalable. H-VPLS is suitable for large network

By contrast, VPLS is relatively simple architecture that is suitable for small-scale VPLS deployments.

The below two diagrams show H-VPLS and VPLS
